Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Gets Drivable Sega Consoles

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is entering its second year with a distinctive lineup of new content, headlined by a collection of vehicles inspired by iconic Sega gaming hardware. Players will soon be able to race using cars modeled after the Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, and Dreamcast, each designed to capture the visual essence of its source console while functioning as a competitive racing machine.

Translating Hardware Into Racers

The development team approached the challenge by extracting design language from each system and reimagining it as vehicle components. Rounded elements from the Dreamcast became fenders and nose sections, while the Saturn's angular geometry transformed into body panels and hoods. The team preserved recognizable colors and components from each era, ensuring players would instantly identify which console inspired each car. Notably, the developers recreated the Dreamcast's Visual Memory Unit using original reference materials from the system's launch period, adding authentic detail to the design.

The Genesis-inspired vehicle posed particular design hurdles. Sega noted that the "Genesis Tower" required substantial experimentation to prevent it from visually interfering with other on-screen elements. Despite these constraints, the final design successfully balances console authenticity with racing aesthetics. The development team explained their philosophy: rather than directly copying the hardware, they translated the defining characteristics of each system into a form that conveys speed and competition. They also incorporated the game's front-and-rear combination mechanic, weaving the concept of pairing consoles and controllers into the vehicle designs themselves.

New Competitive Mode

Beyond the console-themed vehicles, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will introduce Duel Mode, a departure from the standard 12-player race format. This mode presents one-on-one matchups that demand strategic thinking as players compete for pole position against a single rival. The shift to head-to-head racing creates a different tactical experience compared to the larger multiplayer races.

Ongoing Content Growth

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds launched in 2025 and has accumulated new content throughout its first year. The game features Sonic and the broader Mobius cast alongside several crossover collaborations. A notable partnership brought content from Neon Genesis Evangelion, the nihilistic mecha anime series, into the racing title. The Sega Consoles Pack represents the latest addition to this expanding roster of cars, characters, and modes.

The game is currently available on PC, with pricing at $22 through select retailers.

Everything here starts from the gaming press — PC Gamer, GameSpot, Destructoid, DualShockers and a few other feeds — and is rewritten rather than reposted. Figures, dates and names are checked against the original report before anything goes up, and a story that cannot be traced back to its source does not run at all.
