A new Mass Effect art collection is launching next week, marking an unusual moment for the franchise as its parent studio faces an uncertain future. Preorders for the Mass Effect Collection begin on Friday, November 6, at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET / 6 PM BST through the Moor-Art website. The collaboration between Moor-Art and BioWare began over a year ago, long before the studio's recent closure, but the timing has given the release a bittersweet quality for fans.
Moor-Art described the collection as transforming from "a celebration of an ongoing saga" into "the bastion in the continuation of a studio's legacy." The artwork was created by Matt Essom and Dan Mumford, both accomplished artists and devoted Mass Effect enthusiasts. Their designs draw inspiration from the characters and worlds of the series, with prints also available as wearable T-shirts.
Limited-edition prints and variants
Essom's contribution captures the emotional core of the franchise, focusing on the bonds formed among the Normandy crew as they ventured through unknown space. His design will be produced as 200 hand-numbered prints worldwide, supplemented by 30 Giclée prints accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Mumford's work centers on the sci-fi horror atmosphere of Mass Effect 2, depicting the crew facing off against the Reapers in a full ensemble composition.
Mumford's poster comes in two distinct versions to reflect player choice. One features Commander Shepard leading the crew, while the alternative swaps in FemShep. Each variant will see 150 hand-numbered prints produced, along with 30 Giclée prints per version, each signed by the artist. Both designs are also available as T-shirts for fans who prefer them as wearable art or framed pieces.
Controversy surrounding EA's response
While Moor-Art's months-long collaboration represents a thoughtful tribute to the series, the broader response from EA has drawn criticism. The publisher announced a sale on items from the BioWare Gear store, a move that fans have called tone-deaf given the circumstances surrounding the studio's shutdown. EA acquired BioWare through an investor consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund before deciding to close the studio.
The decision has sparked efforts to reverse course. A Change.org petition has circulated among supporters, though such campaigns rarely sway corporate decisions. Canadian fans have taken a more direct approach, attempting to persuade lawmakers that BioWare merits rescue and preservation. The studio's closure represents a significant loss for the gaming industry, as BioWare has been a major developer for decades, creating beloved franchises including Dragon Age and Knights of the Old Republic.
