GTA 5 modder finds love through teleportation chaos

A Grand Theft Auto 5 modder has documented an unconventional path to matrimony within the game, courtesy of the Dating Simulator mod—also known as Anoxic Dating in its in-game menus. The mod transforms GTA 5 into a dating experience where players can pursue romantic relationships with female NPCs encountered on the streets of Los Santos, though the process proved complicated by the modder's own technical limitations.

How the Dating Simulator works

The Dating Simulator mod brings a romance system to GTA 5 by allowing players to approach women and initiate conversations. The progression toward a relationship follows a specific hierarchy: repeatedly asking an NPC how they are eventually yields a phone number and "Friends" status. From there, discussing topics like the weather and expressing that you miss them gradually increases intimacy. The mod does not support male NPCs as romance options, limiting the dating pool to female characters. Each stage of the relationship requires substantial repetition—the modder needed to have the same conversation dozens or even hundreds of times to advance through the ranks.

The teleportation problem

The modder's romantic progress was severely hampered by an unrelated mod issue: a tendency to teleport to random locations on the map every 50 seconds. This constant displacement made it nearly impossible to maintain a conversation with a potential partner, as the player would vanish mid-dialogue. The Dating Simulator mod does include a workaround for this exact problem—players can teleport their girlfriends to their current location, effectively summoning them wherever the player ends up. By repeatedly teleporting and then summoning his romantic interest back to his side, the modder was able to continue the courtship despite the constant map-wide jumps.

The path to marriage

The modder's strategy involved cycling through the same process dozens of times: asking how the NPC was doing hundreds of times, teleporting away, summoning her to his new location, and resuming conversation. This unconventional approach gradually advanced the relationship meter. The culmination took place on the roof of a skyscraper, where the modder attempted to propose by repeatedly asking "Will you marry me?" However, the NPC initially refused. Faced with a ticking teleport timer and desperation setting in, the modder made a decisive move: he purchased 22 sports cars for his reluctant bride-to-be at $45,000 each. The gesture proved persuasive, and she accepted his proposal. The modder admits he cannot remember her name, but confirms they are now married within the game.

The broader modding context

This dating experiment is part of a larger ongoing project where the modder has been modifying GTA 5 daily, attempting to either transform it into a PC version of GTA 6 or break it entirely. The Dating Simulator mod was reactivated after the modder updated Script Hook, a tool that apparently breathed life into numerous older mods that had previously failed to function. The modder acknowledges that some of these resurrected mods may not have been intended to work together, creating unpredictable interactions like the constant teleportation issue. Despite these complications—or perhaps because of them—the experiment has produced an entertaining, if chaotic, virtual romance.
